The symbol of the project is Demesio Lusardi, born in 1927, who «represents the historical and territorial continuity of traditions, values and culture, precisely because he is of rural origin and a contemporary of the stories told in Novecento».
Demesio was one of the key figures in the film, he was the voice of rural folk in many scenes and since 1976 he has lived with his family at Corte le Piacentine, the set for 15 months of shooting. «It is through his figure that Il tempo lungo retraces the stages in the construction of an epoch-making film which transformed the countryside of Emilia into a film set for fifteen months», in the words of the authors.
